For Sexual Assault Awareness Month, PAAR wants to shed some light on the facts surrounding sexual violence. Because rape and sexual assault are so rarely discussed, much of the information regarding these crimes does not receive the attention it deserves. Here are some facts that may surprise you.<\/p>\n
1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually assaulted by the age of 18.<\/strong><\/p>\n Every 2 minutes in the United States, someone is sexually assaulted.<\/strong><\/p>\n The U.S. is ranked 13th in the world for highest occurrence of rape.<\/strong><\/p>\n 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed rape; 2.8% attempted rape).<\/strong><\/p>\n About 3% of American men \u2013 or one in 33 \u2013 have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.<\/strong><\/p>\n 60% of sexual assaults are not reported to the police and 97% of rapists will never spend a day in jail.<\/strong><\/p>\n Victims of sexual assault are 26 times more likely to abuse drugs and 13 times more likely to abuse alcohol.<\/strong><\/p>\n Victims are also 3 times more likely to suffer from depression, 6 times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, and 4 times more likely to contemplate suicide.<\/strong><\/p>\n 93% of juvenile sexual assault victims know their attacker.<\/strong><\/p>\n 67% of adult victims know their attacker.<\/strong><\/p>\n Rape results in about 32,000 pregnancies each year.<\/strong><\/p>\n College students think 50% of rape claims are false.<\/strong><\/p>\n Studies find that only 2-7% of rape claims are false.<\/strong><\/p>\n Sexual violence affects an incredibly large portion of the American population.
