MYTH: Sexual crimes are about sex.
FALSE… Every sexual crime is about violence, power and anger.

MYTH: Rapists commit these crimes in order to get sex.
FALSE…Rapists enjoy terrorizing and humiliating their victims. Many rapists are married or are involved in intimate relationships.

MYTH: Victims are sometimes at fault.
FALSE… The victim is never at fault. NEVER. It doesn’t matter how the victim was dressed, whether she/he was drinking or doing drugs or out at night alone. The absence of injuries doesn’t mean consent. Rapists use threats to control their victims or spike their drinks with “date rape” drugs. Whatever happened, each rape victim does her/his best to survive. The responsibility rests with the rapist.

MYTH: You can tell who is a rapist.
FALSE… Rapists come from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds. Often the rapist is someone the victim knows, such as a friend, acquaintance. Rapists may be attractive and charming; qualities that they use gain the trust of victims.

MYTH: Women claim rape to get even with men.
FALSE… Nationwide surveys of police departments indicate that rape is one of the least falsely reported crimes.
