Trauma work at PAAR transcends diagnostic labeling by recognizing human difficulties as creative/adaptive responses rather than signs of illness. Sexual abuse is a relational trauma that affects people's core beliefs about themselves and the world. Healing from sexual abuse occurs within the context of a repairative relationship. This relational work requires sufficient safety, understanding, and time for the transformation of the client's core self.
Services for Adults
The effects of sexual violence can be long-lasting. Victims often suffer from depression, anxiety and flashbacks as a result. Counseling can help survivors manage their emotions and reclaim their body and spirit to begin healing.
At PAAR, clients are active in their own healing. They work with their therapist (and others if in group therapy) to understand the effects abuse has had on their lives. With time, clients learn to trust, communicate and make empowering choices.
PAAR makes every effort to accommodate clients’ busy schedules. Evening appointments are available. In return, clients are expected to attend their regularly scheduled appointments.
Services for Children, Parents and Families
Child victims of sexual abuse need expert therapy to help them overcome their feelings of guilt, shame and confusion about the abuse. Parents and guardians are an integral part of their children’s lives so PAAR offers family therapy as well. Play and art therapy are utilized for young children so they can communicate their abuse to a trusted therapist.
Our Credentials
PAAR’s clinical therapists are professionally trained in all aspects of the treatment of trauma and sexual abuse. All clinical services are held in the strictest of confidence and follow ethical and professional standards of practice.
How Can I Reach a Counselor?
Call PAAR’s office at 412.431.5665. Ask to speak to the “intake specialist”. You will be asked questions about yourself and your reasons for contacting PAAR. You are welcome to ask the specialist questions.
Next an assessment appointment is made. You will meet with a therapist who will help you determine what kind of therapy is best for you. Depending on what is determined during the assessment, you may start therapy here or elsewhere. You might also decide to delay therapy.
With the exception of children, the individual must call for her or himself. Friends and loved ones can get help for their own feelings, but they cannot schedule an appointment for someone else.
