"We are all powerful because we survived." ~ Audre Lorde
African American women are more likely to fall victim to sexual violence than their Caucasian counterpart, and are less likely to report the crime. Why? Institutionalized racism in the justice system, nervousness about public intervention, and a scarcity of support professionals with similar ethnic backgrounds are all barriers to seeking help.
PAAR, with financial aid from the FISA Foundation and Staunton Farm Foundation, wanted to help break down the walls by placing staff in high risk neighborhoods to partner with community leaders and to work with survivors where they feel most comfortable and safe.
Project VOICE aims to help women of color heal through strength, wisdom and a celebration of self. A PAAR counselor and educator will rotate time in the Hill District, Duquesne and the North Side. PAAR's partners in the project are Duquesne Community Partnership, Hill House Association/Hill District Community Collaborative and the North Side Christian Health Center. PAAR staff will provide on-site counseling, support groups, workshops and trainings for neighborhood agency professionals to learn about rape trauma and its impact on their clients.
Services are now available. All services and programs are free and confidential. To reach Project VOICE's therapist, call 412.523.5643.
