Always remember the following:
- Be truthful with your date about what you want and don't want out of a relationship. Tell them!
- Walk away from a dangerous or uncomfortable situation. Trust your instincts!
- Go out in groups. Get to know the person while you’re with your friends.
- Meet in a public place, like a restaurant, coffee shop, mall, etc.
- Always take money. Carry enough cash to make calls for help or a ride.
- Don’t leave food or drink unattended.
- Take care of yourself. Don’t worry about being “nice”.
Avoid people who:
- Don’t listen to you
- Give mixed messages
- Ignore personal space and boundaries
- Tell sexist jokes or make sexist comments
- Act jealous or possessive
- Pressure you sexually
- Engage in excessive alcohol or drug use. Studies show that 75% of date rapists and 55% of victims have been drinking or using drugs.
Do:
- If you’re going to a party, use the buddy system. It's a great way to protect each other; there is safety in numbers.
- Match words and actions.
- Be cautious about giving too much personal information to someone you just met.
- Avoid being alone in unknown or isolated places.
- Be aware of your surroundings and what is going on around you.
Plan Ahead:
- Ask others about the person you’re interested in dating.
- Observe how they treat others and how they talk about men, women, sexual behaviors and relationships.
- Plan the date together and be assertive about what you do and don’t want to do.
- Tell someone else your plans and how to reach you.
