Always remember the following:
  • Be truthful with your date about what you want and don't want out of a relationship. Tell them!
  • Walk away from a dangerous or uncomfortable situation. Trust your instincts!
  • Go out in groups.  Get to know the person while you’re with your friends.
  • Meet in a public place, like a restaurant, coffee shop, mall, etc.
  • Always take money.  Carry enough cash to make calls for help or a ride.
  • Don’t leave food or drink unattended.
  • Take care of yourself.  Don’t worry about being “nice”.

Avoid people who:
  • Don’t listen to you
  • Give mixed messages
  • Ignore personal space and boundaries
  • Tell sexist jokes or make sexist comments
  • Act jealous or possessive
  • Pressure you sexually
  • Engage in excessive alcohol or drug use. Studies show that 75% of date rapists and 55% of victims have been drinking or using drugs.

Do:
  • If you’re going to a party, use the buddy system.  It's a great way to protect each other; there is safety in numbers.
  • Match words and actions.
  • Be cautious about giving too much personal information to someone you just met.
  • Avoid being alone in unknown or isolated places.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and what is going on around you.

Plan Ahead:
  • Ask others about the person you’re interested in dating.
  • Observe how they treat others and how they talk about men, women, sexual behaviors and relationships.
  • Plan the date together and be assertive about what you do and don’t want to do.
  • Tell someone else your plans and how to reach you.
